Motorbike Riding FAQs

Question: Do I need a specific motorcycle licence in Australia?

Answer: Yes. Each state in Australia works differently when it comes to licencing, however each state requires that you have a motorcycle licence, not just a general automotive licence. Check with each state’s Department of Transport for all the rules and regulations specific to your current state.

Answer: Most riders tend to choose a 250cc bike for riding in general conditions. This will get you around on Aussie roads without being too powerful. If you are choosing your first bike, then you might like to go with a common make and model, so that any repairs if you drop your bike are easy to get done.

Question: How do I avoid getting in an accident?

Answer: Unfortunately, many car drivers are not attuned to motorbike riders on the roads. This means that you should ride as if people can’t see you at all. Always be careful, and expect other drivers to be stupid. Motorbike riding means complete concentration. Always give yourself plenty of space, and make sure to practice really “seeing” everything on the road. Practice counter steering. This means when you are turning above 15km/h, turn slightly left to go into a left turn, then steer more right.

Question: What should I be wearing while riding?

Answer: The most important thing that you should be wearing while riding is a full face helmet. Partial helmets simply don’t provide the facial protection that you need should you come off. Boots are essential (preferably up the ankle), as are some riding gloves. You should also ride with pants and a jacket, to provide skin protection. Remember, that if you come off without covering up, the road is going to really get into your skin.

Question: What’s the best way to get more motorcycling experience?

Answer: Other than practice, practice, practice, there are a few other things that you can do to become better at motorcycling. The first is to go out and practice with an advanced driving course. Many driving schools offer this. The other thing that you can do is to join a motorbike club, where they arrange rides in different places, so that you all go in a group together, on a certified ride. Another thing is to practice your driving in different places and conditions.

Question: What sort of liability cover do I need for my bike?

Answer: In Australia, you need to have third party compulsory cover for repaying the costs associated with any injury that you cause to other people through the course of your riding. It is highly recommended that you get third party property damages, too, to cover damage to anyone else’s property. You can also get coverage that will repay any of your own medical bills, damage, or destruction of your bike, when you are at fault. There will be other items you can add such as fire and theft cover, too.
